Historical Association Lecture at the University of Lincoln

Disinherited: The BBC and Decolonisation in 1950s Britain

Speaker: Dr Marcus Collins, Loughborough University

Abstract: This talk examines how the BBC responded to the end of empire in the period immediately after the 1956 Suez Crisis. It shows that the BBC joined its forces with those of the British state, from the Houses of Parliament to District Commissioners in colonial Africa, to present decolonisation as a continuation of an imperial ‘civilising mission’ to audiences at home and abroad.

Further details: The talk will begin at 6.15pm on 10 October 2022, at the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Pool campus. Details of the specific location of the talk will be circulated a couple of days before it takes place.
